Flowtoys can currently be controlled by DMX through some open source software and our wireless bridge. It is not an ideal solution yet, and there are other ways it could be done that we have not yet developed. We’re waiting for the right hacker to make it happen :)
What would be required to control my props with DMX?
You would need:
- Chataigne: http://benjamin.kuperberg.fr/chataigne/en
- One of these: https://flowtoys.com/props/bridge-for-app
- a DMX to computer interface
This may require some software and/or firmware tweaking to work the way you want.
Although this is a very software-heavy solution that requires running a computer during the show, it does enable incredible integration and show control including almost all possible multimedia and even robotic devices.
A simpler solution for a typical performer would be a wireless bridge that has a DMX cable input, and a list of parameter addresses they could hand to the house lighting designer, who could then add them to the house light show, with very simple mode/color control. More complex control is possible but harder than expected. This option would currently require a very capable hacker to solder DMX, MIDI, etc. directly to a bridge, and adapt the bridge firmware to work with it.
In any case, the bridge would have to be placed on the stage very close to the performers for reliable use in a typical RF-noisy stage environment.
