Many have asked about putting capsule or vision spin9 handles on your fire poi rigs. We love the aesthetic, but it comes with some considerations:
- Fire damage is not fully covered under our lifetime warranty, as it exceeds “intended” use. You can still get half-price replacements if anything happens - just contact us.
- Be prepared to dedicate a set of fire heads and capsule lights to this purpose - trying to rig a "hot swap-able" version will include extra hardware and feel clunky.
- LED props are made of plastic and can become permanently charred, melt, and/or fail. Proceed with caution and at your own risk.
That said, the show must go on and if you're here for uniting fire and glow and become the next wizard, read on!
Options for connecting your LED handles to your fire poi head:
- Direct connection/no exposed metal: technora to capsule, or technora to cord connector
Technora is a fickle material, but it is a game changer to have that rope feel on your fire poi, plus it doesn't melt.
To use technora with your LEDs, you will need to create some solid point of connection. Here are your options:
- Epoxy puck: You can create an epoxy puck in both the capsule, or our 3d printed cord connector for a streamlined/no-metal feel.
We recommend checking out this guide: Beacons podmoding guide for creating epoxy pucks for your capsules.
Beacon's process is also similar for creating epoxy pucks in cord connectors, you just have to make sure your connector is on your leash before you start forming epoxy.
If you are installing an epoxy puck on a vision cord connector, make sure the puck does not protrude from the cord connector! Tolerances on the vision props are extremely tight, and even an extra millimeter too much epoxy can interfere with your vision button functionality.
- A screw in an epoxy puck: In this method, the epoxy puck is outside the capsule shell. This method is ideal if you prefer your tether thicker, but also don't want to modify your capsule shell. Here's a picture of a capsule handle rig using this method: - Connect via quicklink or swivel
Next option is the old standby - quicklinks! These chain link looking carabiners come with a threaded locking mechanism that you can use to easily switch heads or handles between sets. Just make sure to check your for tightness before each time you spin, so you flaming poi heads don't go flying into the audience!
Capsules handles v2 come standard with a stainless steel swivel, perfect for attaching to a quick link. Again make sure you check your hardware to ensure all connections are secure before spinning.
You can also splice the swivel directly into your technora tethers like this: - Connect via paracord loop
Note: Use this method with extreme caution! If your paracord connection spends anytime directly exposed to fire it can melt and fail!
This method is the most convenient in terms of not needing tools, but you are trading convenience and comfort for overall safety when it comes to fire.
We use this method for our modular vision kits - it allows you to turn poi into chucks/meteor into darts, e.g. vision spin9 kit
At the end of the day, preparing a prop that is perfect for you, meets all of your needs, and is safe to you and your audience should be your top priority.
