When it comes to contact staff moves, the off-center weight of the hook handle does not roll well at all, but works fine with many contact moves, such as sliding and point-to-point contact, as you can see in the Spades video below (Spades' canes have no grip, which also allows them to slide a little instead of forcing a roll)
The Derby handle rolls fairly well, but is less compatible with other canes and props like balls and clubs. If you only plan to contact 1 cane, the derby handle would be best.
Our resident contact staff expert, Jacob Turner, has tried all the options, likes the versatility of the hook handle, and can’t decide between grip and no-grip.
Grip helps with point-to-point contact (conveyor belt, halo, jesus roll, and similar tricks), but prevents sliding moves, and a lot of sliding moves are very cane-appropriate.

Adding grip to a vision cane:
Because there are so many different use cases, grip for the cane is only available as a DIY wrap-on kit. The grip kit enables you to add or remove it to figure out what works best for you. It can also go over the connector and shaft if you don’t plan to break it down, or as separate sections so you can. It can also go over flow mass if you add that. It is not super quick and easy to take on and off, so plan on figuring out what works best for you and leaving it that way.

Adding weight to a vision cane:
To improve the inertia and feel for contact moves, flow mass can add weight to the 1” tube at the tip of the vision canes, and at both ends of the full-vision cane. Jacob does like the added weight, but if you have a faster style, do more tossing, or want a more traditional can look, you might not. Flow mass is fairly economical and easy to add and remove.
